About Our Programs

KEEN San Francisco offers free, volunteer-led programs that are open, unstructured, and flexible, giving every Athlete the opportunity to have fun, build confidence, and experience success—on their own terms.

Our programs are designed for youth ages 5 to 21 with physical or developmental disabilities. Some programs are geared toward specific age groups to better meet developmental needs.

Key Features of KEEN Programs:

  • Always Free of Charge
  • Led by Volunteers
  • Age-Appropriate & Non-Competitive
  • Open-Ended and Flexible
  • Tailored to Each Athlete’s Needs
  • Inclusive—Welcoming All, Regardless of Disability Severity

KEEN San Francisco programs are offered on a seasonal basis—Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Not all programs are available every season, so please refer to our Current Schedule for the latest offerings.

KEEN welcomes every child, regardless of the nature or severity of his or her disability. In its open, unstructured and non-competitive environment, every child can enjoy every activity without the fear of losing or not being the best. KEEN "Athletes" gain confidence and self-esteem, and perhaps most important, a sense of social belonging. And they have fun!

KEEN’s programs are offered entirely free of charge to families and caregivers.

KEEN Athletes have disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and various intellectual and developmental disabilities. KEEN's unique model allows for people with any type of disability, including those with significant needs, to find success. For some of the children and young adults who are unable to participate in other programs, KEEN may be their only recreational activity.

At each KEEN session, a participating athlete (participant) is paired with a coach (volunteer) for a variety of age-appropriate recreational activities. In recruiting volunteers we emphasize that commitment to the program can be flexible and will not require regular attendance (though this is welcome). For this reason the coaching "volunteer" will more often than not change from session to session.
